Overseeding
Fall overseeding for thicker, greener Fescue lawns across Bartow County.
Rebuilding Fescue Lawns After a Georgia Summer
Tall Fescue is the best cool-season grass for our shaded Cartersville and Bartow County yards, but it takes real damage every summer. Heat, drought, and brown patch thin the stand, leaving gaps where weeds are waiting to move in. Overseeding is how you rebuild that density — and it only works if the timing and prep are right.
Our overseeding window for Northwest Georgia runs late September through mid-October. That’s when the soil is still warm enough for fast germination but the daytime heat has finally broken, so fresh seedlings aren’t scorched the moment they emerge. UGA Extension specifically recommends September–October seeding for tall fescue; anything earlier risks heat stress and disease, anything past early November usually doesn’t have time to root before the first hard frost.
Good overseeding is almost entirely about soil contact. We mow low, clean up debris, core aerate to open up our heavy clay, then drop a premium turf-type tall fescue blend at the right rate paired with a phosphorus-rich starter fertilizer. After that, the most important part is your watering plan — and we set that up with you before we leave.

What Makes This Service Different
Late Sept–Mid October
UGA Extension’s recommended seeding window for Georgia fescue. We seed inside that window so new grass has time to root before winter.
Turf-Type Tall Fescue
We seed modern heat- and drought-tolerant tall fescue blends bred for Southeast summers — not the coarse, brittle fescue your grandparents’ lawn used to be.
Light & Frequent Watering
New seed needs the soil surface to stay consistently moist for 10–14 days. We leave you with a clear watering plan so you’re not guessing.
Every Overseeding Service Includes
- Premium turf-type tall fescue blends bred for Georgia heat
- Full soil prep: mowing low, dethatching where needed, core aeration
- Starter fertilizer high in phosphorus for fast, strong root growth
- Proper seeding rates (3–5 lbs / 1,000 sqft overseed; 6 lbs for renovation)
- Watering plan and aftercare guidance to protect your investment
Benefits
- A thicker, fuller Fescue lawn that chokes out most winter weeds on its own
- Strong new roots established before next summer’s heat hits
- A beautiful, cool-season green through fall, winter, and early spring
- Noticeable improvement in thin and bare spots within a few weeks
- A renewed lawn without the cost or disruption of a full sod replacement
Honest Considerations
- Overseeding is a Fescue service — warm-season lawns like Bermuda and Zoysia are not overseeded in our region
- We cannot overseed if pre-emergent has been applied in the last 8–10 weeks; we plan the two services carefully around each other
- Germination takes 7–14 days and full establishment takes most of the fall — the payoff is a much stronger spring lawn
- Your watering plan in the first two weeks is critical; missing days during germination is the #1 reason an overseed underperforms

Other Services
Our services are built to work together. Explore how overseeding fits into a complete lawn care program.

Fertilization
Custom feeding programs built around your grass type and our red-clay soil — Bermuda and Zoysia on a warm-season rhythm, Fescue on a cool-season one. Slow-release blends carry your lawn through the full season with steady color and deep roots, without the surge-grow-mow cycle of big-box bags.

Weed Control
Two precisely timed pre-emergents each year — one in late winter to stop crabgrass and summer weeds, one in late summer to stop winter annuals — paired with surgical post-emergent spot work in between. Every active ingredient is matched to your turf so we never trade weeds for turf damage.

Aeration
True core aeration pulls plugs from Bartow County’s compacted red clay, opening channels so water, air, and nutrients finally reach the root zone. It’s the single highest-impact service most Northwest Georgia lawns get all year, and it pairs perfectly with fall overseeding on Fescue.
